Behind the Lens: A Two-Day Street Photography Workshop with Simona Aru

Updated: Sep 27

This August, Mill Tye Gallery had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring two-day street photography workshop led by the talented photographer Simona Aru in collaboration with Jackie Mellor, and Gainsborough's House. The workshop, titled “Behind the Lens,” took place on the 19th and 20th of August, running from 10 am to 4 pm each day, and offered participants a chance to delve into the fascinating world of street photography.

Exploring Street Photography

Street photography is an art form that captures genuine, everyday moments, freezing them in time without staging or interference. It’s a practice that demands both curiosity and the ability to see the beauty in the ordinary. Simona Aru believes that street photography is about “connecting through observing people, and their interaction with their environment.” During the workshop, she encouraged participants to go beyond simply documenting scenes and instead to develop a personal style, driven by inquisitiveness and a passionate curiosity about their surroundings.

Day One: Getting Behind the Lens

The first day focused on exploring the fundamentals of street photography. Simona guided participants through the process of capturing candid moments, offering tips on how to be unobtrusive yet observant. Attendees were encouraged to wander the streets, allowing their surroundings to inspire them and spark creativity. There were lively discussions about composition, lighting, and storytelling, all aimed at helping participants find their unique voice as photographers.

Day Two: Reviewing, Reflecting and Editing

The second day offered a valuable opportunity for participants to review their work. Simona,  provided constructive feedback, guiding attendees on how to refine their images to create a stronger impact. This session wasn’t just about editing—it was about understanding the story behind each photograph and learning how to make those narratives even more compelling.

A Unique Perspective at Gainsborough’s House

One of the workshop's highlights was the chance to reflect on the two days of street photography from the unique vantage point of the Camera Obscura at Gainsborough's House, with guidance from Learning Officer Steph Parmee and Jackie Mellor.

Participants could observe the world through a different lens, drawing inspiration from this historic optical device and gaining a new perspective on their own work.

An Inspiring Experience

By the end of the workshop, attendees had gained not only technical skills but also a deeper appreciation for the art of street photography. They left with a fresh set of eyes, ready to capture the world around them in new and exciting ways. Simona Aru’s guidance, combined with the hands-on support from Steph Parmee and Jackie Mellor, made this workshop an enriching experience for all involved.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and helped make this workshop a success. Stay tuned for more events and opportunities at Mill Tye Gallery, where we continue to put a spotlight on creativity and artistic expression!

I really enjoyed the workshop - It was amazing to see Simona at work and I gained some invaluable insights into street photography that’s changed the way I take photos.

Great Fun!

Alison Kenny

I found Simona inspirational - loved the history & looking at images. Helped me to try to add that other dimension into a shot, to make an OK picture into a good picture.

I found it difficult to approach people initially. After a few attempts this became more natural. The overview Simona gave us during the morning was very useful to help me to look for opportunities when photographing. I’m very grateful that Simona was able to share her experience with us.

Great workshop so far. Looking forward to tomorrow.

A very interesting second day. I found it easier when taking pictures in the town today. I also believe I have better images today (TBC). It was a very different feel to the subject. Reviewing images taken was very worthwhile - I learned a lot from this.

The history of street photography introduction, looking closely at the photographs for inspiration, really helped me to look at scenes in the street through different eyes. I made so many mistakes but learnt so much and your Mum’s cake was delicious!

I had a rewarding morning’s photography supported and inspired by Jackie and Simona. It was enjoyable trying to apply some of the ideas we explored yesterday.
