Exploring Clouds Through Fabric and Paint
Following the success of her previous workshops, textile artist Eleanor Mills returned to Thomas Gainsborough School for a third inspiring session on 25th March. This time, students turned their attention to the sky, using oil pastels and fabric paint to interpret cloud formations on cotton fabric.
Guided by reference photos Eleanor had taken, the students explored new ways to combine these familiar materials. Through stippling techniques, layering, and experimenting with brushwork, they discovered how to create depth and texture, bringing their cloud studies to life. While the process was more subtle compared to the dynamic energy of tie-dyeing, the focused and calm atmosphere allowed for thoughtful exploration of fabric-based artistry.
Eleanor also introduced feedback sheets, giving students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences. Their responses highlighted how much they enjoyed the workshop, particularly the calming atmosphere and the chance to experiment with new materials. Many appreciated the opportunity to try stippling techniques, and while it was a different experience from tie-dyeing, they found it engaging and rewarding. Several students expressed excitement for future workshops and learning more about different artistic techniques.

With each workshop, Eleanor’s project continues to grow, building towards An Appliqué Afternoon at Mill Tye Gallery. We can’t wait to see what unfolds in the next session!

We warmly welcome you to An Appliqué Afternoon, Eleanor’s exhibition opening this September. This showcase offers a unique glimpse into how these workshops have shaped her work, celebrating both artistic exploration and the creativity of our local community.
