Hare and the Sweet Meadow – Max Angus at Mill Tye Gallery

We are delighted to share the latest work from printmaker Max Angus SWLA, whose evocative linocut print ‘Hare and the Sweet Meadow’ draws inspiration from the beautiful landscape and passionate conservation work taking place in Great Massingham, Norfolk.

Last year, Max visited the Great Massingham Biodiversity Project at the kind invitation of local naturalist Tim Baldwin. Great Massingham may be a small East Anglian village, but thanks to the dedication of Tim and a group of like-minded residents, it’s become a flourishing pocket of biodiversity.

Wandering through meadows on the edge of the village, Max was struck by the quiet beauty of the land and the careful restoration in progress. Tim pointed out tiny wildflowers, groundcover plants, and even species that hadn’t been seen in the area for years – returning now thanks to local efforts to rewild and protect the landscape.

It was this moment — the delicate balance between wildness and human care — that inspired Max’s linocut ‘Hare and the Sweet Meadow’, a four-block print rich in texture and detail. The image captures the energy of a hare in motion, surrounded by native flora and framed by the tranquil sweep of Norfolk countryside.

Max’s sensitivity to the natural world and her ability to translate it into print is a hallmark of her work. This piece celebrates not only the vibrancy of British wildlife, but also the power of community-led conservation.
