Repairing the Mara Cu
Photographic Contone Print produced by The Curwen Studio.
In 2007 Stanley Jones asked Noel Myles if he would agree to having his palladium print of this image made into a 'Contone' lithograph edition at their expense.
The 'Contone' process was a secret (patent pending) way of making a continuous tone, grainless photographic lithograph. Very few prints have ever been made using this process. Curwen Studio's master printer, Tom Martin, produced this lithograph from four superimposed plates, printing them on their 1950s press at Linton, outside Cambridge. Curwen Studio has since closed it's doors
Stanley Jones considers this print to be the finest example of the process. It is reproduced in his book on the history of Curwen Studio and in The National Printmaking Festival catalogue for 2009.
Mill Tye Gallery has a few copies of this lithograph that depicts the boat 'Mara Cu' being repaired on Blackshore, Southwold on the banks of the River Blythe.
